Breath

Most of the systems keeping us alive operate without needing our consciuous attention. The heart adjusts its pace. Blood pressure rises and falls. Digestion continues. Body temperature is regulated. The nervous system constantly makes small corrections in the background while we work, sleep, eat and move through the day. Breathing is different though. It belongs to the same automatic system, but we can take control of it whenever we want. We can slow it down, speed it up, hold it or change the length of an exhale. A few seconds later, we can stop thinking about it entirely and the body continues on its own. That makes breathing an unusual connection between what is voluntary and what is automatic - and one of the most direct ways we have of influencing our physiological state.

The Loop

Breathing changes quickly when we are under pressure. It usually becomes faster and moves higher into the chest. This is useful when the body needs to respond physically, but the same pattern can appear while sitting at a desk, having a difficult conversation or thinking about something that has not happened yet. The relationship luckily also works in the other direction. Breathing does not simply reflect the state of the nervous system but changing the way we breathe sends new information back into it. This is one reason slow breathing has become interesting to researchers studying stress and autonomic regulation. When breathing is slowed, particularly to around five or six breaths per minute, heart rate begins to rise and fall more strongly with each respiratory cycle. Blood pressure regulation, heart rhythm and respiration become more closely coordinated. The effect is measurable through changes in heart-rate variability, one of the ways researchers observe how flexibly the autonomic nervous system is responding. Note that you are not switching stress off but are giving the body a different rhythm to work with.

Less is More

We tend to assume that taking a deep breath means taking in as much air as possible. Physiologically, this is not necessarily useful. Breathing is partly about oxygen, but it is also about maintaining the right amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. If we breathe considerably faster or deeper than necessary, carbon dioxide falls. This can cause light-headedness, tingling and, strangely enough, the sensation that we need even more air. For calming the system, the useful breath is therefore often smaller and quieter than expected. Rather than repeatedly filling the lungs to capacity, slow breathing allows ventilation to remain comfortable while reducing the pace. The difference is subtle, but important. The aim is not to breathe more. It is to breathe differently.

Way Back

The nervous system is designed to move between states. There are moments when activation is exactly what we need: exercise, concentration, competition, danger. The problem is not that the body can become stressed but when activation continues long after the situation requiring it has disappeared. Breathing offers a way of participating in the return. A slower respiratory rhythm, particularly with a relaxed and slightly longer exhale, is associated with changes towards greater parasympathetic influence and reduced physiological arousal. This does not mean that a breathing exercise removes whatever caused the stress in the first place. A deadline remains a deadline. An uncomfortable conversation still needs to happen. What can change is the physical state from which we meet it. And with regular practice, the breathing pattern itself becomes familiar. Rather than trying to remember how to calm down when stress is already high, the body has rehearsed the route before.

Control

There is something useful in practising this when nothing is wrong. Much like cold exposure, the purpose is not only the immediate sensation. Repetition makes a physiological response easier to recognise and influence. You begin to notice when breathing has become unnecessarily quick. When the shoulders have risen and when an exhale is being cut short. These are small things, but they tend to happen before we consciously decide that we are stressed. Breathing gives us something physical to work with at that point. Not control over the situation, necessarily. But some control over the response.

Practice

There is no single breathing technique that everyone needs to follow. For regulating the nervous system, research around slow breathing consistently points towards a fairly simple range: approximately five to six breaths per minute. Try five minutes. Breathe through the nose if comfortable. Keep the breath easy rather than taking unusually large inhalations. Around four seconds in and six seconds out is a simple place to begin, without needing to follow the timing perfectly. The exhale can be slightly longer than the inhale, but neither part should feel forced. If you become dizzy or feel that you need more air, return to normal breathing and make the next attempt gentler. Practised regularly, the aim is not to become someone who thinks about breathing all day. Quite the opposite. It is to know that when the nervous system becomes loud, there is a way to speak back.
